O'Neil was a student at high school when she auditioned in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. The contestant was able to climb to the top ten spots because of the judges' excitement for her performance. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by judge. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant loss in top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, lowest 3 and the the bottom 2. The judges were shocked at this, and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa with most impressive singing talent. O'Neil did not make it to the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performance. The two other performances she gave on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil advanced to the top two spots in the contest. Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
